Last Friday, October 22, took place the first of the seven university regattas scheduled for the academic year 21-22 by the Sports Department and the Nautical Campus of the University of Cadiz. Fifty members of the university community (students, PD and PAS) took the start in thirteen raquero boats, where a skipper and three crew members were embarked in each one of them. This initiative, developed in competition format, aims to initiate students and the rest of the university community in the sport of sailing, taking advantage of the relationship of our environment with the sea. Another aspect to be valued is the cooperation and coexistence among the members of the boats, in which the skipper acts as a learning tutor to the rest of the crew. These are not required to have previous nautical knowledge, since the boat is characterized by being a school boat of reference in the initiation to sailing. Under this model of activity, the vice-rectorships of Culture and Digitalization and Infrastructures, with the indispensable collaboration of the Municipal Institute of Sports of the City Council of Cadiz, which provides the spaces and part of the technical staff to manage the event with total security, aim to promote nautical sports activities at the University of Cadiz, which is currently a national and international reference.
A westerly wind of low intensity throughout the day allowed a three-leg regatta with a great sporting atmosphere. The boat of skipper Marta Torres Lijo (School of Naval and Oceanic Engineering) stood out with two first places and a fourth place that gave her the final victory in the regatta. Behind her were the boat of skipper Joan Cirerol Sitjar (Escuela Superior de Ingeniería) with 11th, 2nd and 1st places and the boat of skipper Mar Fuster Simo (Escuela de Ingeniería Naval y Oceánica) with 2nd, 3rd and 2nd places. The rule of discarding the worst race gave the second place to Joan’s boat against Mar’s boat.
The next regatta is scheduled for Friday, November 12, also in the waters of the Bay of Cadiz.
